2016 Barbara L. Frye Journalism Scholarship Winners

TALLAHASSEE – The Capitol Press Club of Florida is pleased to announce it has awarded the 2016 Barbara L. Frye Scholarship to 13 aspiring Florida journalists from colleges and high schools around the state and nation.

“We are pleased to be able to recognize so many talented young journalists,” said Jessica Bakeman, president of the Capitol Press Club of Florida. “We received a record number of applications this year from a diverse and talented field of students. It is an encouraging sign for the future of journalism in Florida.”

Money for the scholarships is raised by the Tallahassee-based Capitol Press Club of Florida, also known as the Capitol Press Corps, through the Annual Capitol Press Skits, held each year during the legislative session. The event pokes fun at politicians and policy in Florida’s capital city.

The scholarship is named after Barbara L. Frye, the Tallahassee bureau chief for United Press International for 38 years. Frye was the first woman to work full time in the Florida Capitol Press Corps and covered 11 governors — from Spessard L. Holland to Bob Graham. Frye was elected to the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 1984 and was a member of the inaugural class of the Florida Press Association Hall of Fame in 1990.
